Coalition agreement: National's Erica Stanford seems to confirm ministerial appointment

After 20 days of dealmaking, a three-way coalition agreement is set to be signed today - but there are still major question marks as to who will be named deputy Prime Minister, as well as which National MPs will be given key ministerial portfolios.

Appearing on AM on Friday morning, Labour's Ginny Andersen and National's Erica Stanford seemed to be in good spirits ahead of the agreement's signing, which is expected to take place at around 11am.

Despite gentle prodding by host Melissa Chan-Green, Stanford remained tight-lipped as to who will take the coveted deputy Prime Minister position and ministerial roles - but did confirm one important detail as to her future in Parliament.

"I got a phone call last night, yes," Stanford revealed, noting that MPs set to be sworn in as ministers received calls from incoming Prime Minister Christopher Luxon either last night or this morning.

"He said some things - to be revealed," she said, adding: "He [Luxon] hasn't told us what everyone else is getting, or who's getting what, because he hasn't made all of those phone calls yet.

"I'm excited to crack on and do the things we said we were going to do."

Stanford also jokingly admitted that despite being seen flying into Wellington on Wednesday, she had not been in the capital for the all-important deputy discussions.

"I can confirm that I am not deputy Prime Minister," she laughed, but was also quick to shut down Chan-Green's questioning as to whether ACT's David Seymour will take the role, as has been speculated in recent days.

"I can't confirm anything else."

Turning to Andersen, Chan-Green joked that congratulations appeared to be in order considering Stanford's admission.

"Immigration or Education? I think Immigration might be great in Opposition but not quite so easy in Government," Andersen hit back.

Following debate over the exploitation of migrant workers, co-host Ryan Bridge couldn't help but prod further at Stanford's revelation, asking: "Erica, do you know what day you get sworn in?"

"I think things are happening early next week," she responded tentatively, to which Bridge hit back with a smug grin: "So, you are being sworn in - nice to know.

"That's the incoming Immigration Minister, Erica Stanford," he concluded, to raucous laughter from the crew.
