Election 2023 final election results: The major upsets in key electorate battlegrounds

The final election results have also caused some major upsets in several electorate battles which will result in at least a couple of recounts.

Te Pāti Māori has now taken all but one of the Māori electorates off Labour, including one by just four votes.

These results confirm they had an absolute blinder.

"Te Pāti Māoriwent up against a red wave in 2020, we went up against a blue wave in 2023 - this is the new norm," said co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.

These were the seats after Labour's red tsunami in 2020, but it's now a maroon monsoon, except, somewhat ironically, in Ikaroa-Rāwhiti.

That was won by Labour newcomer Cushla Tangaere-Manuel beating the incumbent Meka Whaitiri who defected to Te Pāti Māori.

But her gamble didn't work and she lost the seat.

Because the party won more seats than their party vote - she won't get in on the list.

"I don't know if she was punished, I think the truth be known that some - and we've seen this happen in our past - some have to first realise what it means to be unapologetically Māori," said Ngarewa-Packer.

The Greens also had a belter. The results confirmed their best election ever.

"I'm pretty stoked. I think I almost fell off my chair screaming when I heard we gained another MP," said co-leader Marama Davidson.

Proving every vote counts, some of the electorates were won with a photo finish.

Labour's deputy leader Kelvin Davis has lost his Te Tai Tokerau seat to Te Pāti Māori's Mariameno Kapa-Kingi by 517 votes.

The closest race in the country was Tamaki Makaurau.

Te Pāti Māori's Takutai Tarsh Kemp has snatched that off senior Labour minister Peeni Henare with just four votes.

"We took out an institution, a brand, and a long-standing Minister," she said.

Labour's Chris Hipkins said that if Henare wanted to call for a recount, "he has my absolute support".

On the general roll, Labour's Rachel Boyack took back her Nelson seat with a lead of just 29 votes.

The margin for Labour's Helen White in Mt Albert has narrowed to 20 votes. Dame Jacinda Ardern won it with a mega 21,000 majority in 2020.

Despite that being obliterated under White, she was proud as punch three weeks ago, saying she had done "really well".

White is now facing a recount call from National.

"There are some pretty close recounts that will probably advance in our case," said Luxon.

The once-embattled Labour Minister Phil Twyford has had a Philnaissance. He's clawed back Te Atatu with a majority of 131 votes.

With National confirming it will seek recounts in Mt Albert and Nelson, and Labour possibly looking for one in Tamaki Makaurau, the Electoral Commission needs to get back to the counting.

That means the absolute final results could still be more than a week away.
