Erica Stanford gives former Police Minister Ginny Andersen fluffy handcuffs for Christmas for 'if anyone says you're soft on crime again'

Ginny Andersen's time as Police Minister has been lightheartedly memorialised in a gift by Erica Stanford as the pair exchanged Christmas presents during AM's final show of 2023.

During the year, the Labour MP and now-National Minister have challenged each other on a range of issues. Andersen, who was the Police Minister before October's election, was often criticised by Stanford on Labour's record on crime.

"This is just a follow-on of the last six years of being soft on crime and making a joke of it," Stanford said last month during a clash with Andersen over National's plan to make gang members cover face tattoos with foundation.

"We're talking about Thin Lizzy on gang members," said Andersen. "I think it's ridiculous."

Appearing on AM on Friday, Andersen and Stanford laughed off the "soft on crime" allegations - with the latter presenting some fluffy handcuffs for her political opponent.

"If anyone ever says that you are soft on crime again, you whip these out," Stanford quipped.

Andersen pointed out the handcuffs were red - the colour of the Labour Party: "That's fantastic."

She also came bearing a present for Education Minister Stanford, gifting her a sex education book. The new Government has pledged to remove sexuality and relationship guidelines in schools - something the pair also clashed on earlier this month.

"I thought considering you were reviewing the sex education guidelines that you might need to bone up a little bit," Andersen joked as Stanford unwrapped the present. "So, I've got you some background information to read up a little bit."
