Golriz Ghahraman: Police confirm probe into alleged shoplifting at Ponsonby store

A day after the high profile MP Golriz Ghahraman was accused of shoplifting, the Green Party has revealed she's overseas.

Police have confirmed an investigation is underway after the Green MP was accused of shoplifting from an the Ponsonby store Scotties Boutique just days before Christmas.  

A spokesperson told Newshub: "Police can confirm a report was received about an incident at a Ponsonby retailer on December 23, 2023."  

Ghahraman, the Greens' justice spokesperson, stood aside from all her portfolios on Wednesday.  

"The Green Party is aware of allegations regarding MP Golriz Ghahraman and is in contact with Scotties Boutique to better understand and address the situation," the Greens said in a statement.  

Green MPs were "expected to maintain high standards of public behaviour", the party said.  

On Thursday, the Green Party confirmed to Newshub that Ghahraman is currently overseas on a personal trip.

"Ms Ghahraman will stand aside from all portfolio responsibilities until the matter is resolved," it said. "The Green Party and Ms Ghahraman will not comment further at this time."  

Police said on Thursday they could also not comment further as initial "enquiries are still being made into this report".  

Ghahraman, a former UN lawyer, has not yet responded to the allegations.
