Christopher Luxon reacts to ACT saying Prime Minister 'styles himself as an elite'

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has reacted to his Coalition partner saying he "styles himself as an elite".

The ACT Party's free press newsletter, sent on Monday evening, discussed political leadership and populism.

In the newsletter, ACT called Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins a "career bureaucrat and former student politician whose word cloud prominently features the word 'weak'".

It also hit out at NZ First leader and fellow Coalition partner Winston Peters as having more time in at the centre of Government than any other current politician, adding he "becomes much more erudite once elected".

As for Luxon, it said: "The other Chris, Luxon, has styled himself as an elite, advertising his credentials as a former corporate CEO. "

When asked about the comments on AM on Tuesday, Luxon laughed - saying he hadn't seen them.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," he told co-host Lloyd Burr.

Burr went on to ask whether Luxon had styled himself as an elite to which he replied: "I've been working pretty hard 'til about 1am this morning and I've got up very early to come and do your fine show with you Lloyd.

"… No, I'm actually here focused on making sure I deliver for New Zealanders and that's what I'm very passionate about, that's what I wake up doing every single day."

To which Burr replied: "You are working hard and you don't sleep at all, to be honest, and now you've got one of your pesky Coalition partners coming out and calling you elite."
