Rugby World Cup: Eight years on, the fan who received Sonny Bill Williams' 2015 medal still can't believe his luck

It was moments after the 2015 Rugby World Cup final when English teenager Charlie Line ran onto the Twickenham field trying to meet his hero, Sonny Bill Williams.

"I got tackled by the security guards and then SB (Sonny Bill) picked me up" Line, now 22, told AM hosts Laura Tupou and Michael O'Keeffe on Friday.

But it was the moments after he remembers most.

"I can remember pretty much every detail about it, it was amazing."

He said his plan was to just get onto the pitch.

"I was completely gob smacked, my idea was just to get on the pitch and then see what happens and go from there."

Line, who lives in Dubai with his family, was with his uncle during the final and said it was his motivation that led him to do it.

"My uncle started shouting, 'Go go go.' I thought, 'Well, I'm 14 and my uncle's gave me my permission, so I can't get in trouble here.'

"[I] ran in, got tackled by security, I was only three months post ACL surgery, so that was the first call I got from knee surgeon, not happy, but yeah he (Williams) gave me the medal and the rest is history."

Line said he and his family reached out to Williams to try give his medal back.

"Somehow through a friend of a friend of a friend, we got in contact with his agent that night and we felt bad because he's earnt it over the last four years training for the World Cup."

However, Williams insisted Line keep his prized possession.

"The text message he sent to me was, 'It's much more important that you sleep with it under your pillow than I have it lost somewhere in my house."

The pair still keep in contact and Line is hoping to link up during this year's World Cup.

"I'm hoping to get over for the quarter finals onwards, SB is over their doing coverage for Stan Sport so I'll be supporting the All Blacks."

Just not against his homeland.

"I will be supporting England against All Blacks, hopefully in the final, that would be amazing."

However, he is realistic.

"I don't think we will make it out of the group stage but one can hope and dream."
