The fine weather means many New Zealanders head into the garden over Labour weekend for a spot of gardening.

However whether it's a lifestyle block, or urban garden, the perfect lawn can often be a challenge.

With grass growth taking off heading into summer, Regional Sales Manager for Husqvarna, Steve Middleton told RadioLIVE's Rural Exchange a few simple things can achieve a lawn to be proud of.

"One of the key things is to get fertiliser on the lawn, while watering and weed control are also major factors," he said.

He said it's also very important not to cut the lawn too short.

"In the hot temperatures in summer it'll burn off quickly," said Mr Middleton.

"A mulching option for your mower is also worth thinking about, putting the goodness back into the soil,"

For those who live in urban areas, electric mowers are becoming increasingly popular.

"Battery mowers are very quiet, which means you can mow the lawn at any hour of the morning without disturbing the neighbours," he said.
