Police name toddler killed in farm drowning

Police have released the name of a toddler who drowned on an Ashburton farm at the weekend.

She was 13-month-old Grace Marie Griffin of Ashburton.

Emergency services were called to a property on Maronan Valetta Rd at about 5:20 pm on Sunday.

"The girl was found unresponsive in a body of water," Senior Sergeant Matt Emery said, while Stuff reported she had drowned in a ditch.

She was flown to Christchurch Hospital by rescue helicopter but later died.

An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.

Police have extended their condolences to the family and say the matter has been referred to the coroner.

In September 2018 a young boy drowned in an effluent pond on a farm in Westland.

Four-year-old Reuben Nolan had been reported missing from the Harihari farm, and was later found dead in the pond.
