The egg-like shape of a kiwifruit has inspired a Queenstown fish and chip shop to produce an unusual Easter treat.

Erik's Fish and Chips has described the creation as a "a deep-fried kiwifruit, infused with dark chocolate and then dipped in chocolate".

Owner Anna Arndt said they were keen to do something special for Easter, and came up with the creation after a team meeting.

She said those who had tasted the treat were blown away.

"We took some up to the local radio station, More FM, and they couldn't believe the taste explosion, with the combination of sour and sweetness," she said.

Arndt said she and the other staff at Erik's had experimented with a few different flavour options.

"We did try to put marshmallow into the kiwifruit as well as the chocolate, but it was too difficult."

The Easter deep-fried kiwifruit is being sold across the Easter weekend.
