Nominations sought for local legends on rural roads

First responders to rural road crashes are being recognised this year as part of a road safety campaign in Canterbury.

The Canterbury Road Trauma Awards are run by the Road Traffic Accident Trauma Charitable Trust (RTATCT).

Awards ambassador, NZ Farming's Duncan Humm told Rural Exchange the Canterbury Road Trauma Awards aim to recognise and reward the work of those who are often first on the scene to crashes.

"These are local battlers, who have to see some pretty horrific stuff."

Humm said most are volunteers, many of whom don't get recognised until they retire from the role.

"They are usually long-termers, and rural stalwarts that hold things together."

The RTATCT also founded Local Legends who help the trust find deserving award recipients.

"We're looking for Local Legends for the Canterbury Road Trauma Awards. Local Legends will help us find deserving award nominees in their local area," he said.

He said they were keen to receive nominations for anyone from the rural community particularly those in the Canterbury Region from Waimate, Timaru, Ashburton, Rangiora, Amberley, Kaikoura, Waimakariri, Selwyn, Lincoln, Rolleston, Banks Penninsula or McKenzie Country.
