Police say there were no suspicious circumstances involved in the death of a stag originally thought to have been shot and killed in its enclosure in Wairarapa.

Police launched an appeal for information on Tuesday, saying the trophy red stag had been shot and killed in its deer enclosure.

It said the incident happened on Blue Rock Road in Martinborough between 10am on July 27 and 10am on July 28.

In a statement to Newshub on Wednesday, police said information initially available indicated the stag had been shot.

However, now officers say further enquiries show that not to be the case, and there were no suspicious circumstances.

It is understood that the red stag was killed by another stag in the same paddock.
