A US woman has survived after falling into a septic tank on a rural property, with authorities saying she may have been there for up to three days.

The Estacada Rural Fire Brigade in Oregon were called to the scene, where the woman was trapped in the tank which contained raw sewage.

Division chief for Estacada Rural Fire District No. 69, Richard Anderson told KATU News that they were alerted by the woman's daughter.

"She got concerned and went up to check on her ... and found her inside of the septic tank," he said.

"It looks like there was work being done on the septic tank. There was a tractor in the area and a hole had been dug exposing the tank. And then she had fallen through about a 2-foot by 2-foot (60cmx60cm) hole in kind of the rusted metal top of the tank." said Anderson.

The woman was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Portland with concerns about the lack of oxygen in the tank and possible infection from being in contact with sewage for so long, said KATU.
