A US farmer's popular annual hay bale creation pays tribute to country music singer, Willie Nelson.

Beth Bays, who owns Buckscrape Farms in Virginia, has made the hay sculptures since a local farmers' group had a hay bale decorating contest eight years ago.

The contest fizzled out, but Bays told news website dayton24/7Now she keeps making them every year because everyone enjoys them.

Past creations have included the Wizard of Oz, a drummer bear, cow, elephant, and characters from the classic 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'.

This year's 'Will-Hay Nelson' hay bale creation has been a hit with the local community and  on social media.

Bay said making the giant-sized singer, complete with trademark plaits and guitar, was a team effort.

"It's a community effort to get these things up every year. Couldn't do a thing without my friends!," she said on Facebook.

Meanwhile, those commenting on her Facebook page are now hoping to get the real Willie Nelson to see it.

"Be cool if Willie stopped by in his bus. Hey Willie are ya listening?"
