Police have named Vaetasi Mati as the victim of a crash in the Bay of Plenty over the weekend.

The crash occurred on State Highway 2 near the Sandhurst Drive onramp and Maunganui Rd on Sunday afternoon.

The 36-year-old, whose full name is Selesele Vaetasi Mati Asiata, was a seasonal worker shortly due to return to his home country of Samoa, reports NZME.

He was originally scheduled to return home last month, but the flight was rescheduled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Two others suffered moderate to serious injuries in the crash, while four people were checked and cleared of serious injuries.

Police on Tuesday said a 35-year-old man has been charged with careless or inconsiderate vehicle operation causing death and was due to appear in the Tauranga District Court on Wednesday.
