Why Dame Lynda Topp became a volunteer rural firefighter

Dame Lynda Topp has done a lot of remarkable things in her time - but now the comedian and entertainer is helping to put out fires as one of 11,500 volunteer firefighters across the country.

The Methven resident says she doesn't "run into burning buildings" like city firefighters, but helps out with emergencies that happen further afield.

"We fight fires in the rural sector... so we're looking at things that happen out in the country," Dame Lynda told The Project.

"A lot of firefighters in the agricultural business, most of them at that point were milking cows and so they needed somebody to cover those hours, somebody who wasn't working - so I got asked to join the local fire brigade."
