How different plant species can reduce the risk of fire on farm

With hot weather across much of the country at this time of the year, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) is urging farmers to act now to reduce the risk of wildfire.

FENZ wildfire expert Rory Renwick spoke to Rural Exchange to share some tips for farmers to protect themselves and their livestock.

"There's a lot people can do themselves to manage fire risk," he said.

One suggestion he had was being aware of what species of plants to have on farm.

"The guts of it is there's a huge difference in the flammability of a lot of different plant species because of their shape and the moisture they hold."
