A cow has reportedly been stranded on ledge above Mowhanau Beach, near Whanganui for two days.

Concerned members of the public got in touch with local newspaper the Wanganui Chronicle saying the cow has no path to freedom.

They were most concerned about the imminent high tide which is expected to come in around 4pm on Friday, the newspaper reports.

Locals have called the Whanganui District Council who reportedly said there is nothing they can do.

Whanganui District Council chief operations officer Bryan Nicholson said the council has spoken with the cow's owner and SPCA.

This is not a council matter but it would offer support if requested, Mr Nicholson said.

The cow is reportedly situated well above the tideline but the ground below her is unstable.
