There will finally be a little bit of tough talk from the Department of Corrections chief executive Ray Smith and Corrections Minister Sam Lotu-Iiga, who are meeting today to discuss the raft of revelations about the privately run Mt Eden Prison

Mr Smith is getting legal advice on the contract with Serco and the options available to him.

National's former Corrections Minister Judith Collins along with deputy labour Leader Annette King joined Paul Henry this morning to discuss the week in politics.

"It's a really tough portfolio," says Ms King. "But I think that Sam is out of out of his depth on this – I think he has been outmanoeuvred by his CEO and certainly by Serco.

"He hasn't been kept in the loop and he's been made to look like he doesn't know what's going on and now this whole thing is out of control."
