Bank profits are on the rise.

KPMG’s latest survey of New Zealand banks has found they made a collective profit of net $1.25 billion in the first three months of this year.

It is not quite a record, but it is a 9 percent increase on the December quarter.

But the banks face tougher times with increased competition, falling dairy prices and slowing economy.
