Bear Grylls has been slammed for dumping his 11-year-old son on rocks out at sea as part of a training exercise.

3 News Europe correspondent Melissa Davies this morning joined Paul Henry from London to discuss the flak the TV adventurer is copping for the stunt organised with Sea Scouts.

"We're not talking about dropping him on Waiheke," says Ms Davies. "This was a crop of rocks that are often covered by water at night time."

"He then abandoned him there and went off to take some pictures, as you do, but when the president of the life boat charity saw these pictures, he said  'Oh God, we can't be seen to be putting a child in such potentially dangerous situations'."
