Key hopeful Tiwai Point remains open

Prime Minister John Key is hopeful Tiwai Point's aluminium smelter will remain open.

A decision is due today on the fate of the ageing Southland plant.

It received a $30 million bailout from the Government two years ago, and Mr Key told Paul Henry it would be a shame to see it shut.

The smelter, near Bluff, is the country's single largest electricity consumer.
