Actress Helen Mirren is firmly in the second category. She spoke out against the public display of affection earlier this week, saying it was a form of ownership she absolutely hates.
But is she right to be offended?
Psychologist and body language expert Suzanne Masefield says it depends on the individual woman and the man in question.
She says to a strong, independent woman, the gesture may feel like an ownership thing but to others it can feel more protective.
