There has been a big increase in prices at this morning's global dairy auction.
The GlobalDairyTrade price index leapt 16.5 percent. That is its largest increase in five years.
Whole milk powder surged 20 percent in price.
But Fonterra has reduced volumes at the auction by 43 percent from a year ago and will still need to find buyers for the rest of its product.
Meanwhile, Silver Fern Farms' shareholder farmers must decide whether to accept an offer from a Chinese company to buy a 50 percent stake in the business.
The $261 million offer would wipe the company's debt and give it greater access to Chinese supermarkets. But some farmers are concerned at the prospect.
