Trump pledges allegiance to the Republicans

Donald Trump has just pledged allegiance to the Republican Party by announcing he won't stand as an independent.

Trump announced this morning if he doesn't get the Republican Party nomination, he won't run at all in the 2016 presidential election.

That's a relief for the Republican Party, which worried that if Trump didn't get the nomination then he would go rogue and it would detract from the Republican vote.

In the latest poll, 59 percent of Republican voters have reportedly pledged support to Trump.

US correspondent Lachlan Cartwright joined Paul Henry this morning to explain the likelihood of Trump's success and more.
