The markets have been volatile lately and that has seen most KiwiSaver funds lose ground.

Morningstar has released its KiwiSaver survey for the three months to September.

Conservative funds were the best performers with an average return of 0.20 percent. Aggressive funds were the weakest performers, falling 4.47 percent.

If you look at the five year performance it tells a different story.

Conservative funds grew by 6.2 percent per annum on average. The aggressive funds gained 8.5 percent per annum. The best performers were the growth funds, rising 9.5 percent per annum on average.

If you are wondering which fund category is best for you the advice is to think about your age and tolerance for risk. The experts say that the younger you are the more time you have until retirement and therefore the more you can afford to be in a growth fund.
