Emma Gilmour is practicing by putting her Suzuki Swift through its paces in a Waikato forestry block in preparation.
The desert is punishing for cars, for the drivers and it's the result of a worldwide search for the world's top female drivers by world rally authorities.
It is a rare honour, and a world away from what she's used to.
The event starts in November, so for Gilmour there will be a few more chances to hone her skills in local conditions.
