American Airlines and Qantas are poised to make a big announcement today.
They are set to give Air New Zealand some competition flying from Auckland to the United States.
The airlines will make the announcement at an event attended by Transport Minister Simon Bridges. His ministry has been considering an application by the airlines to fly the Auckland-to-LA route.
The prospect of increased competition saw the Air New Zealand share price fell 4.9 percent to $2.72 yesterday.
Any competition on the New Zealand to mainland USA route will mean cheaper fares.
