Hot diet trends of 2016

Angela Berrill (Paul Henry)

Dietician Angela Berrill joined Paul Henry to talk about the hot diet trends for 2016.

1.            Blue zone diets - Blue Zones are 5 zones in the world where people live the longes: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California.

2.            Plant foods and plant protein - Vegetarian / veganism – stats showed that vegetarian’s has grown by 27% since 2011 and is predicated to rise. We'll see a variety of both plant- and animal-based proteins added to existing foods to call-out items as high-protein. Rather than serving up the same old chicken breasts and burgers to get complete protein, expect to see more plant-based options like quinoa, chia and buckwheat as protein staples.   There’s also the rise of plant protein powders.

3.            Elimination diets – Get ready to start slashing foods from your fridge. Elimination diets can be useful for figuring out the root cause of a health issue (think cutting dairy to see if it helps your acne). Elimination diets for food intolerances to either help with metabolism, digestion, or skin issues.
