Demand for Tesla's mass market electric car has far exceeded expectations.
The company says 250,000 people have now paid a deposit of US$1,000 (NZ$1450) to pre-order the Model 3.
But the first in line won't receive their car until late next year, at the earliest.
Among the people who will be last in line will be New Zealand customers. That is because Tesla has decided right-hand drive cars will be the last to go into production.
