It’s been dubbed the Zika Olympics, but the outbreak of a virus linked to a string of birth defects isn’t the only hiccup Rio is facing on the road to the Olympics.

Last week the state government declared a state of financial emergency so it could petition the Brazilian government for 900 million in emergency funds.

Earlier this month scientists found a drug resistant super bacteria lurking in the waterways earmarked for swimming and boating events.

Millions have taken to the streets demanding the President be impeached over corruption scandals.

On top of all that, two Australian paralympians were robbed at gunpoint over the weekend.

And overnight, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy has become the third golfer to opt out of competing.

So, with just over six weeks to go, is Rio a disaster waiting to happen? Or can we right these hiccups off as teething problems?

Broadcaster and Veteran Olympic Commentator John McBeth spoke to Paul Henry this morning.
