By 2040, Auckland needs a total of 400,000 new homes built, the Unitary Plan says.
But just to keep up with growth over the next seven years we'll need to build 131,000 new dwellings.
That's 51 houses every day.
Which means every day the council stalls on making a decision, we're getting further behind.
Chief executive of Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce Michael Barnett joined Paul Henry to discuss the plan and whether the last five years have put us on the right track.
