Supercity 'inefficient' - research

New global research has found the idea of a supercity run by a super council is a "terrible one".

According to the New Zealand Initiative, communities are far better off with smaller councils because they run more efficiently.

The Netherlands and Switzerland have thousands of local authorities; they're ranked as the first and fifth most competitive countries by the World Economic Forum.

In Montreal, Canada, the city's annual operating cost rose by more than $400 million after it merged 28 districts into a single council.

New Zealand Initiative Research Fellow Jason Krupp joined Paul Henry to discuss if it's time for Auckland to ditch the amalgamated council structure.
