The figures don't lie - currently four out of five Māori prisoners are re-convicted within five years of being released.
In April the Waitangi Tribunal could not have been more clear in its criticism of the Department of Corrections.
The tribunal said the Crown had breached its Treaty of Waitangi obligations by failing to address the high rate of reoffending by Māori.
And while there have been promises made and reports written on how to reverse that trend, a prisoner aid organisation and a former Kiwi league star are making a real difference, one young Māori at a time.
