Winston Peters suggests 'a big kangaroo' for new Australian flag

Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters has reignited his flag feud with Australia by suggesting our trans-Tasman neighbours update theirs to include a giant kangaroo.

Mr Peters says Australia copied our flag - so they should be the ones to change.

"In 1901, we adopt our flag. In 1954, they adopt a flag that is almost identical to ours. The facts speak for themselves," he told Newshub Nation on Saturday.

"I think we've even got the solution for them - probably a big kangaroo, like the maple leaf in Canada."

The New Zealand First leader says the similarity between Australia's flag and our own leads to confusion at international events.

"When you see us at the Olympic Games or the Commonwealth Games … it is very confusing to see which flag is which."
