'President Trump hasn't got a fair go from day one' - US Ambassador

The American Ambassador to New Zealand is supportive of US President Donald Trump's combative stance with the media, saying the President is justified in 'fighting back'.

Scott Brown told Newshub Nation that while "there is an absolute obligation and right for the press to do their jobs", he thinks those on the receiving end of media criticism have the right to push back.

"If you're the subject of some of those stories, you have every right by our constitution and free speech to fight back - and the President is fighting back," he told Newshub Nation.

"I've said this to him from the beginning, I don't think he's got a fair go from the media from day one....He is using Twitter to go right to the people."

President Trump has frequently referred to media as 'the enemy of the people', and took to Twitter last week to also call the press 'dangerous and sick'.

When asked about the unfolding political turmoil in the US this week, the Ambassador was unfazed.

"It's politics as usual quite frankly. If you know the history of our country, both parties have highs and lows, ebbs and flows. Our founding fathers wanted democracy to be messy."

"There are people who will still support him regardless and people who will never support him regardless."
