Greens focused on 'delivering what we can' - Genter

The Green Party is focusing on what they can deliver in Government, rather than what they can't, Julie Anne Genter says.

The party is strongly in favour of a comprehensive capital gains tax, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has ruled it out as long as she's leader.

Genter told Newshub Nation host Emma Jolliff on Saturday the party has to be pragmatic.

"The Greens are very focused on delivering what we can in this Government, which includes significant and meaningful action on climate change, we want to see an overhaul of our welfare system, we want to see and we have seen a huge increase in funding for conservation."

Genter said the party would be pushing for other Tax Working Group recommendations, particularly around environmentally focused taxes.

"We are going to work with the Labour Government on the things that the Tax Working Group recommended around ensuring that we have appropriate prices around pollution, and when it comes to housing we're going to have to ensure that people have rights when it comes to renting."

She is personally in favour of a capital gains tax, saying she believes people should pay tax on any income earned, regardless of where it comes from.

Ardern said it was clear to her the country doesn't support it, and coalition partner New Zealand First didn't back it either.

Genter said the Green Party is committed to working with the Government for the rest of the current term, and the best way to ensure it can push harder in the next is to get more MPs in Parliament.

"The way that we're going to be able to implement our policy is by demonstrating that we're credible, that we're working where we can with this Government and telling the voters that if they want to see change they've got to vote Green at the next election."
