Simon Bridges has called out the the Department of Corrections for paying more than $1 million for 193 slushy machines to keep prison guards cool in the summer.
The cost comes to $5,675 per slushy machine.
While Mr Bridges calls it "wasteful spending", Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says he supports the health and safety-related spend.
