Why do humans stereotype?

Stereotypes are a part of society - everything we know has some kind of label or attachment to it.

This isn't normally a negative thing, but can become a problem when they're false or create a prejudice against someone or something.

Psychology and Public Affairs Professor Susan T Fiske specialises in stereotypes and how we can avoid conflicting ones. She spoke to Duncan Garner.
