Federated Farmers believe the Lake Ōhau fire could have been prevented.
The group of farmers have said for years that locking up high country land without proper care is dangerous and has lead to the growth of combustable vegetation.
They claim the risk will become greater as new freshwater policies are implemented and livestock destocking takes place.
