The United Nations will release its latest report on Monday but we already know the world isn't doing enough to stave off the worst effects of climate change.

National climate spokesperson rejects suggestion by party adviser that further climate action is unnecessary

However new National Party adviser Matt Burgess, formerly an economist at the New Zealand Initiative, has argued New Zealand’s existing policies already have us on track to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and further climate action is a waste of money.

Senior reporter Conor Whitten sat down with National Climate Change spokesperson Scott Simpson to ask if he agreed with Burgess and whether the party still supports the Zero Carbon Bill.

Simpson said Burgess' remarks were made in a report for the New Zealand Initiative and do not reflect National Party policy or position.
