Newshub Nation panel says Government's response to Cyclone Gabrielle shows 'disconnect' between it and affected communities

The political panel on Newshub Nation says there is a "disconnect" between the Government's response to Cyclone Gabrielle and what people in the affected communities actually need.

On Friday, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle has revealed an area where New Zealand can do better in terms of disaster preparation and response.

After the cyclone hit many places on the east coast of the North Island were uncontactable because fibre lines were broken and there were outages at cell sites.

On Saturday, Business Desk senior reporter Dileepa Fonseka told Newshub better communication is needed between those in Parliament and those on the ground in the impacted regions.

"There is a disconnect between central and local government. One doesn't trust the other," Fonseka said.

"One has all the funding whereas one is always struggling for funding."

Associate Professor of politics Lara Greaves agreed and said it is difficult for people not physically there.

"It's hard for us as people that are removed from the regions to actually figure out what that effect is on those communities," Prof Greaves told Newshub Nation.
