A club cricketer in England has died after being hit in the chest by a ball.
Bavalan Pathmanathan was batting for Manipay Parish Sports Club in division three of the British Tamil League when he was hit in the chest and collapsed beside the pitch.
The 24-year-old was given CPR and paramedics quickly rushed to the scene, but the all-rounder later died, despite giving teammates a thumbs-up, after being rushed to hospital in a "life-threatening condition".
A teammate who was batting at the non-striker's end at the time talked to the Colombo Mirror about the incident in Surrey.
"When he received the hit I asked from the other end if he is alright. He gave a thumb-up and nodded to indicate he was alright, while pressing his chest.
"He took a couple of steps behind the stumps and collapsed.
"He was such a talented and composed cricketer and a darling friend of all of us."
Surrey chief executive Richard Gould expressed the county's sadness to The Guardian.
"Everyone at the club has been deeply saddened to learn of Bavalan's death and would like to extend their sympathies to his family, friends and everyone who knew him from within the community of cricket."
