If the selectors have indeed decided Ben Smith is their starting fullback for the Rugby World Cup, is there a place for Israel Dagg?
In 2011, the team carried two fullbacks with Dagg usurping Mils Muliaina for the top job. In fact, Mils almost became an afterthought to the point where he wasn't even in the match-day 23.
So, why bother with two specialist fullbacks when an injured player can be replaced by a player from outside the original squad?
Plenty of players can cover at fullback - Nehe Milner-Skudder, Colin Slade, Charles Piutau come to mind.
But, if Dagg finds his form of 2011 then he can rectify the problem himself.
