Video: Alastair Cook hit in the groin during Ashes first Test

Alastair Cook

England captain Alastair Cook had to leave the field after being hit in the groin while diving for a catch in the slips.

Australia's Steve Smith edged a James Anderson delivery, but unfortunately for Cook, it pulled up short and caught him with a low blow while he was diving down.

His teammate Joe Root was first on the scene and saw the funny side as Cook rolled around on the floor in pain.

Cook tried to carry on, but he eventually succumbed to the pain and headed off to the changing rooms for what we can only assume was a treatment of an ice pack and a sit down.

He returned to the field just before the tea break and was the subject of jokes from the commentary team.

"What's the treatment? A pack of ice?" asked Ian Botham in the commentary box.

"I think meditation is the only thing," replied former England captain David Gower.

Australia finished the day 264-5, trailing England's first innings score by 166 runs.
