All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster has warned players not do press themselves over team selections.

Steve Hansen and the All Black selectors face many tough squad decisions ahead of this year's Rugby World Cup, but Foster believes players shouldn't be looking to outdo each other.

"We don't want individuals going out thinking 'this is my only opportunity' and have to do something special outside of what we currently do," Foster said.

"We know selection is on players mind, but reality is the best way to get selected is to do your job in the team."

With Dan Carter and Sonny Bill Williams left behind to rest, Hansen will name a new first-five eighth and his third midfield combination this year.

Beauden Barrett started in the All Blacks 27-25 loss to the Springboks at Ellis Park last year, but Hansen has other options in the versatile Colin Slade or uncapped Lima Sopoaga.

Conrad Smith returned to the squad after sitting out Tests against Samoa and Argentina, and he is likely to start alongside Ma'a Nonu in a veteran midfield that has played a combined 180 Tests.

"This is a big test, South Africa in South African, and this is the type of game that everyone in the squad wants to play," Foster added.

"We're not lacking for motivation from everyone."
