David Warner and Steve Smith both hit half centuries as Australia dominated the first day of the fifth and final Ashes Test.

Put in to bat by England, the Australian batsmen grinded away at the crease to finish on 287-3 after bad light halted play.

England's bowlers were made to toil as the openers put on 110 for Australia's first wicket.

Captain Michael Clarke was given a guard of honour by the England team when he came out to bat, but he could only manage 15.

An unbroken century stand from Smith (78) and Adam Voges (47) ensured the tourists would see out the day on top.
