Scott Curry has been named captain of the All Blacks Sevens squad that includes the likes of Sonny Bill Williams, Liam Messam and Ardie Savea ahead of next year's Olympic Games.

The core squad will play in the Sevens World Series in 2015/16 and will be in contention for the final 12-man Rio Olympics squad.

Curry replaces DJ Forbes, who stepped down from the captaincy last month, and was the natural choice for Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens.

"I'm confident naming Scott, his performances last year were simply outstanding as a leader," said Tietjens.

"He led the team in Vegas last year and also during the Wellington tournament as well. With DJ being captain for the last six or seven years, it's huge shoes to fill but [I'm] very confident that Scott can do the job admirably."

Auckland's Akira Ioane and Ben Lam round out the new faces in the squad from last season.
