Which All Blacks backs make Rugby World Cup cut?

The composition of the All Blacks backs for the Rugby World Cup throws up more questions than answers.

One issue is do you take a specialist number 10 in Lima Sopoaga and a specialist fullback in Israel Dagg or is it better to include the more versatile Colin Slade and Beauden Barrett?

Sopoaga had an encouraging debut in Johannesburg and showed throughout the super rugby season that he is a man for the big occasion, but he's been upstaged by a fit-again Dan Carter since.

Is it that coach Steve Hansen likes what he saw against the Boks and immediately pencilled him into the 31-man World Cup squad? Or has he thought that Sopoaga is a top prospect and an ideal replacement for Carter when he heads off to France post-World Cup?

If Sopoaga is not in the World Cup squad then it would appear Slade and Barrett are very much in the frame. But Slade is also leaving for Europe at season's end. Do you 'invest' in this player for the here and now – or do you take Sopoaga with an eye to the future?

And what about Barrett – like Slade, he has versatility. Slade can play first five, wing, fullback and Barrett has shown before what energy and excitement he has off the bench.  But are Slade and Barrett a bit samey? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Logic says Barrett is a shoo-in for Sunday – Slade not so much. Does Slade remain at home in New Zealand and be first to get the 'Stephen Donald' call if needed.

What about Dagg? He hasn't been in vintage form though his booming punt and ability under the high ball are highly treasured by Hansen who has been loyal to Dagg over the years.

If Dagg doesn't go that means Ben Smith is the only specialist fullback. Though, of course, Barrett, Slade, and Nehe Milner-Skudder can play there if needed.

Then there's Cory Jane. Hansen has been loyal to him too but a lack of game time is the major concern here. Interestingly both Jane and Sopoaga have had time at fullback during the ITM Cup – is this significant?

Charles Piutau is another player heading to Europe at year's end. He has been in great form in the black jersey and looked a World Cup certainty after the Jo'burg Test where he was Man of the Match.

But with three halfbacks and four midfielders is there room for him? Maybe, if they take two halfbacks. But that seems unlikely. Could it be that it's either Dagg or Piutau but not both?

The other factor is the All Blacks' pool is so weak that the top-string side will play the opener against Argentina and the selectors can choose anyone against Georgia, Namibia and Tonga.

Surely you don't want to go into a quarter-final against France or Ireland with a combination that hasn't played together for a few weeks. The team has been here before.

For all the speculation and time spent on who's going, the reality is that that only very few people know who's going to be on the plane for the United Kingdom.

The selectors have a tough job, and that's exactly the way it should be.
