Kiwi pubs gear up for Rugby World Cup kick-off

Former All Black winger and Fijian legend Joeli Vidiri couldn't wait to finish work today.

He believes his beloved Fijian team will be no soft touch in tomorrow's opening match of the Rugby World Cup.

"I can't wait to see that game, looking forward to it. The whole family, the whole Fijian community will be standing still all over Auckland."

Bars and pubs around the country will be doing anything but.

The bunting is up and hospitality staff are bracing themselves for a six-week onslaught.

The knives are out for anything but black at Auckland's rugby-mad Kingslander.

Lyndon Katene is using tomorrow's opening match breakfast as a warm-up for an All Black final.

"We're just hoping they do well and we can resemble that in the kitchen with our food."

All four All Black games and the final fall outside normal trading hours.

Last-minute legislation means bars and pubs can open an hour before kick-off and after the final whistle without needing a special license.

But if rugby's not your thing and it's the final whistle you can't wait for, brace yourself, it's going to be a long six weeks.
