Japan has pulled off the biggest upset in rugby history, beating the mighty Springboks 34-32.
The man who scored the winning try in injury time was former Otago and Napier Boys High winger Karne Hesketh.
From Flaxmere in the Hawke's Bay, Karne made his debut for Japan last year.
Today his father, Wayne, spoke about his son's role in what's being called the biggest upset in rugby history.
Even Wayne didn't believe Japan had it in them.
There are seven New Zealanders in the Japan squad, including captain Michael Leitch. Wayne says his 30-year-old son saw Japan as a way in to playing international rugby.
"He didn't make it in the All Blacks here; he might as well do something else, go somewhere else and try, and he has and he's stuck by it and he's done well," says Wayne.
Japan coach Eddie Jones is known to Kiwis as the former coach of Australia and assistant for South Africa. He targeted New Zealand players for their strength and skill.
In an interview with 60 Minutes before the tournament, he offered a cheeky warning.
"The World Cup's due for a few upsets. We might be the ones to cause it."
Going into last night, there were 47,000 people left in the TAB's One Punt in a Million competition, which offers the chance to win $1 million if you can pick the correct winning margins for every game.
After Japan's win, there was only one; Russell Walker, a part-time security guard from Kaiapoi in Christchurch.
"I just picked random guesses and that's it. I just picked them to win, no science behind it," he says.
It seems to work. He also picked Georgia to beat Tonga. The good news is New Zealand's best result predictor in the World Cup so far has picked the All Blacks to win the tournament.
